Nursing Implications
To ensure proper care when administering beta blockers, the nurse should:
Ensure patient's allergies, medications, and medical history are not contraindicated.
Monitor blood glucose carefully as beta blockers can mask symptoms of hypoglycemia.
Obtain patient baselines of renal function for comparison.
Closely monitor patient's blood pressure.
Assess renal studies such as protein, BUN, and createnine.
Monitor for increased levels which can indicate nephrotic syndrome.
Monitor patient's intakes, outputs, and weight daily.
Monitor patient's pulses, radially or apically, at least every 4 hours. Note the rate, rhythm, and quality.
Hold medication for a systolic blood pressure <90 or heart rate <60. Call the provider in case of bradycardia.
Assess edema in feet and legs.
Evaluate therapeutic response to medication.
